Breast Augmentation Basics
Augmentation is for anyone with the desire to make a change and the willingness to do something about it. We offer a variety of sizes, shapes and styles to help you meet your aesthetic goals. Perhaps your boob job is part of a well-deserved mommy makeover package. Or maybe you’re a hardworking young professional gal seeking to spoil herself by going up a subtle cup size. No matter who you are or what part of your journey has brought you to this moment, your ideal results are obtainable!!
Breast augmentation is customizable. I will meet the needs and circumstances of the person getting the procedure. There are three factors I consider when matching the best boob job to one of my clients.
Three Factors Comprise a Boob Job:
- Type and size of implant
- Type of incision
- Position of implant
Is a Boob Job Right for You?
Before we begin customizing your procedure, my staff and I must first determine if you are a good candidate. Breast augmentation recipients do share some key features in common.
Qualities of an ideal breast augmentation candidate
- A basic understanding of the augmentation procedure
- Not currently pregnant or breastfeeding and will not in the future
- Good general health
- A desire for larger breasts
What Type of Implant Should I Get?
Breast implants are classified by their composition, size, shape and texture. Each of these factors will greatly influence your final aesthetic result. I take time to discuss these choices thoroughly with my patients to give them a well-rounded idea of their options. I aim to arm you with knowledge so that you can feel confident your augmentation results will be just right for you.
We recommend that you do your own research. Look at photographs of the various options available to you and make a decision based on your own style and taste. In order to best customize your procedure plan, I invite you to make a list of your questions to bring with you to your breast augmentation consultation. This is your body and your decision, and I want it to be a positive experience, from start to finish. I welcome clear and open dialogue at all points of treatment!

What Will My Implants Be Composed Of?
When it comes to breast implants, there is a great divide–a cleavage, so to speak–between the two main types: silicone and saline. Both types can help you to safely and effectively reach your body goals. But there are subtle differences in experience that you should be aware of as they may greatly influence your decision.
Silicone implants have been available on the market for longer than saline implants.
They are filled with a synthetic substance designed to replicate the movement and feel of a natural breast. You may decide you prefer silicone implants if achieving a convincing look is important to you.
Saline implants, on the other hand, offer a certain level of flexibility. They can be inflated after they’ve been implanted. So, the incision area can be smaller, which can reduce the incidence of surgical scars following the procedure.
Saline implants lack some of the lively look that silicone implants have. Though an added benefit of the saline filling is that it’s a saltwater solution that is very similar to our body’s natural fluids. In the unlikely event of a rupture, the saline solution is harmlessly absorbed into the body. It’s also easier to see that a saline implant has ruptured because they immediately deflate.
Silicone requires closer supervision by your doctor.
A silicone implant rupture is rare but still possible.(1) You will receive an MRI every two years following your procedure to make sure that your implants are functioning properly.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that consumers be aware of the possible risks of your breast augmentation, regardless of the composition of the implants.
FDA’s Possible Risks for Breast Implant Recipients
- Breast pain
- More surgeries
- Capsular contracture (scar tissue that squeezes the implant)
- Breast implant associated-anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL)
- Breast Implant Illness (BII)
- Rupture of saline and silicone implants
- Deflation of saline implants
- Infection
How Big Will My Breasts Be?
This is an important question to consider and probably the most obvious! Breast implants come in a variety of sizes to match with an individual’s body type and needs. Implants are measured in cubic centimeters, which is why you’ll often see their various sized rendered in units of CC.
The size of implants typically ranges from 80CC all the way up to 800CC. As part of your consultation with Carolina Plastic Surgery, you will sit for a sizing session. At your session, you will get your measurements. Another one of our staff may ask you to insert a series of prosthetics sizers into your bra. This will give you and I an approximation of how you will appear following your surgery.
It’s important to remember – your bra size is not your breast size.
This ends up being a source of confusion for many of your patients. Not many women know that cup sizes are not standard across all bra types. One brand’s C cup is another brand’s D cup. Use the CC measurement in correspondence with your doctor to avoid any miscommunication. Iwant to have a clear understanding of all your aesthetic intentions.
How Will My Implants Be Shaped?
Spherical implants offer some advantages. Their round shape allows them to rotate in the breast pocket. And spherical implants offer their unique set of value propositions to the prospective patient.
With the right cocktail dress, you’ll be hard to ignore!
The round implants create a dramatic change in the chest. The cleavage can be more pronounced as these implants tend to present themselves noticeably.
Spherical implants are designed to augment the natural features of a young, healthy pair of breasts. The art of the perfect breast enhancement is finding that balance between results that are subtler–which is a look that a lot of women find desirable–and sculpting the kind of popping chest that really makes an impact.
For older patients, the right implants can give a slight, pleasant lift to aging breast tissue. In fact, a breast lift is a common complementary procedure to a boob job. The two procedures can really make an impact when done together. During a breast lift, excess skin is drawn back and tightened. Your nipples can be repositioned. Higher nipples are suggestive of a younger, firmer breast.
For younger patients who may already be well endowed, breast augmentation can achieve subtle enhancements that make a big difference without appearing too obvious.
What Texture Will My Breast Implants Be?
Smooth implants are intended to allow some movement of the prosthetic within the breast pocket without causing distortion. And smooth implants can have minimal impact on the surrounding breast tissue.
Until recently, textured implants were an alternate variety.
Allergan, the company that produced textured implants, recently did a voluntary withdrawal of the product. The FDA has linked the textured implants to incidence of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), a cancer of the immune system.
Because the textured implants are no longer on the market, new breast implant patients have very little chance of being exposed to the risk. But the FDA does alert those who may be affected by the risk to consult with their doctor(2)
Where Will the Incisions Go?
As part of the bespoke process of determining exactly how you’d like your post-op chest to appear, I will have a discussion with you about your incision options. The size and type of the surgical entry incision is dependant on the size and type of your implants. When you chooseCarolina Plastic Surgery of Fayetteville for your augmentation, you can be confident that I will take every step possible to reduce the incidence of scars.
Periareolar Incision
Periareolar incisions are made along the areola border, at the nipple. The unique color and texture of the nipple will often camouflage most scars.
Inframammary Incision
An Inframamary incision is created on the natural crease under the breast. We do this to cleverly hide any possible scarring under the natural folds of the chest.
Transaxillary Incision
The transaxillary incision is hidden in the armpit.
Transumbilical Incision
Transumbilical incisions are hidden in the belly button. This is the best method for minimizing the incidence of scars. But, only saline implants can be used for this technique since they are inserted empty. The saline implants are inflated only after they’re in position.
What is the Placement of My Breast Implants?
There are two options for the positioning of your boob job: sub-glandular and sub-muscular.
Sub-glandular implant placement is closer to the surface of the skin. It is less complicated procedure since it doesn’t require as deep an incision as other techniques. Sub-glandular placement is more ideal for younger women with firmer skin to support the weight of the implant.
Sub-muscular implants are placed under the chest muscles. This version of the procedure is best suited for our more mature patients or women with smaller breast pockets. Sub-muscular placement allows for more support and puts less strain on the breast tissue.
