What is Botox?

BOTOX (onabotulinumtoxin A) Cosmetic is a neurotoxin and is used to treat moderate to severe frown lines.  It became the first drug to have FDA approval in 2002, for the treatment of moderate to severe frown lines.  BOTOX Cosmetic received FDA approval in 2013, for the treatment of moderate to severe crow’s feet.

How does it work?

Botox temporarily improves moderate to severe crow’s feet- Botox is injected into the orbicularis occuli (muscles surrounding the sides of the eyes).

To temporarily improve moderate to severe frown lines-Botox is injected into the corrugator and procerus muscles (muscles located between the eyebrows and directed above the most medial portion of the eyebrow

How long does the treatment take?

Botox treatments are quick and are frequently referred to as the “lunchtime beauty fix”.  Botox procedure is a technique sensitive procedure and Dr. Saira Saini of Carolina Plastic Surgery, PC can have the treatment administered in approximately 10 minutes.  This procedure requires no downtime.

What are the side effects of treatments?

The most common effects are the temporary pain at the site of the injection, inflammation/swelling, redness, bleeding/bruising.  Infection is very rare in our experience at Carolina Plastic Surgery of Fayetteville, PC.

Review of the literature also lists eyelid drooping, dry mouth, neck pain, headache, eye problems, double vision, blurred vision, dry eyes, decreased vision, allergic reactions (itching, rash/red welts, dizziness, feeling faint, wheezing, asthma symptoms.

Is it permanent?

For most patients the effects of the injection lasts for approximately three months.

Will Botox Cosmetic make me look unnatural or frozen?
